On the Importance of Voting

Published on April 04, 2010 at 4:55pm by Sylvia Guerra in Elections

With elections season in full gear all around us, and with all of the posters, the lengthy presidential platforms, and the never-ending invitations to candidate Facebook groups it is easy to become jaded members of the Students’ Association. However, it is important to remember just that; we are all members, and the people who are elected to office represent all of us.

That being the case, this is the most important time for everybody to be as involved as possible in the process of selecting their representatives. As senators, we make decisions that impact not just individuals, but the entire community as a whole, and this trust and responsibility should not be conferred without careful consideration.

It is sometimes said that students are not very involved with Student Government on campus. If this is the case, then it is even more more important that students select representatives that they trust to represent them when they are ‘not looking,’ so to speak. Of course, the Students’ Association tries to make itself as accessible and transparent as possible to those who are interested - minutes are posted on The Hive, and Senate meetings are open to the public (Mondays at 9pm in the Gowen Room). But, this does not mean that an individual’s vote is not one of, if not the most powerful ways they can make their voices heard.

With that, I urge you to visit sa.rochester.edu/vote and carefully consider every platform you are eligible to vote for. This is not a time to vote on who has the coolest name, who appears where on a ballot, or even who your friends are. It is a time to carefully consider who you want to represent you before the student body, administrators, and throughout the campus community.

I urge you first to vote, and second to do so conscientiously this Monday and Tuesday April 5th and 6th. And remember that a vote isn’t just a slip of paper in a box (or a click of a mouse), rather it is the power of your voice speaking your preferences. Use it wisely.
