Petition to Change the Students’ Association Government Acronym from “SA” to “SAG”
The Students’ Association Government at the University of Rochester has for the longest time carried the acronym “SA” to identify themselves as a group on campus. At face value, this doesn’t seem problematic. But this messaging to promote Student Government is highly contentious.
The acronym “SA”, while used at Rochester to represent the Students’ Association, also represents the words Sexual Assault. This acronym is wholly inappropriate, and even triggering to survivors of Sexual Assault on campus.
The name of the Students’ Association Government could be easily changed to “SAG” to more appropriately represent who the organization is to the university community, and take away confusion when promoting community events. If you ask anyone on campus, this thought has crossed their mind more than once.
Therefore, we the undersigned, ask the Students’ Association Government, specifically the Students’ Association Senate and President to work together in changing the Students’ Association name and promotional material to use the acronym “SAG”, and thereby be officially called the “Students’ Association Government” in the future.
