Remarkable Fall 2022 (08/15/2022 – 12/01/2022)

BMES Picnic Newsletter (September 13th, 2022)

 by Wenqi Di on 09/13/2022

On Friday, September 13, BMES and the biomedical engineering department 2022 organized a picnic to kick off the new school year. Members of all undergraduate classes, graduate students, professors, and their families attended the picnic. The picnic, the first time since the pandemic, brought the BME department together to celebrate human interaction once again. At the start of the new school year, students, especially freshmen, feel supported by helping them connect with their professors and peers and talk about academics and life together. We hope that there will be more such opportunities to establish communication and connection between the department and students so that we can make progress together.

Graduate Information Session (September 29th, 2022)

This year’s Graduate Information Session will be held on September 29, 2022. The University of Rochester offers a master’s degree program in the University’s graduate school program specifically in medical device design. The event is face-to-face. Dr. Amy Lerner and Dr. Maddox described some postgraduate clinical projects, curriculum, project design, and career paths of some alumni of the project during the info section. The sessions consisted of presentations followed by general and individual questions. They answered a lot of interesting questions regarding the application and the program from students.

Summer Internship Information Session (October 12th, 2022)

 by Wenqi Di on 10/12/2022

BMES hosted its first Summer Internship Sharing Session since the COVID-19 pandemic on Wednesday, October 12 at Goergen 101. BME students from all classes meet in person with senior BME students to receive advice about study life on campus, summer work, and research opportunities. Most of the participating students intend to declare cellular engineering or biomechanical engineering. BMES hopes that those who attend this event enjoy spending time at school with others who understand the struggles of this profession and reminisce. The connections made through this sharing session will be useful to all students as they progress in their school life and professional development.

BMES & UR Undergraduate Research Office: Summer Fellowship Information Session (October 24th, 2022)

 by Harry Huang on 10/24/2022

BMES was invited by the Undergraduate Research Office to cohost an undergraduate summer research workshop on October 24 at Robbins Library, Rush Rhees. I was invited to give advice about study life on campus, summer work, and research opportunities in front of students from all year groups of STEM-related majors. I hope after this section students could better understand how to find the research in areas they are interested in.

Linkedin 101  (November 10th, 2022)

On Thursday 10th November, BMES held a LinkedIn workshop. The activity essentially teaches the students how to use it, when to use it, etc. First, a short speech from Dr. Lerner introduced the Internet and how to build a good image, detailing what to do and what not to do. She shows some of the excellent LinkedIn profiles (including her own account) and explains how to use LinkedIn to connect with alumni. The event was great and the students felt that they had a better understanding of LinkedIn and improved their profiles.

Hi Everyone!
Our next mentoring event will be on Tuesday, December 3rd from 8:30-9:40 am in Goergen Atrium! Starbucks coffee and Wegmans muffins will be served!  We will be focusing on the BME 101 poster session which will be this Friday. First years will be able to get valuable advice on the poster presentation from the upperclassmen who have been through it before.

Sophomore mentees, you can be mentors on this topic too! You can also come with questions about classes, summer research etc.

You do not need to stay for the whole event, and you can stop by on your way to class! This is a great way to get your end of semester questions answered or help out younger students who are having college finals and big projects for the first time. Hope to see you all there!
