SIMCON XXXVII: Thanks for Joining Us!

Thank you to everyone who attended SIMCON 37!  We had a great year despite some unfortunate last-minute occurrences.  I hope everyone who attended had a great time, because the admin team had a great time, too.  As always, we appreciate any feedback you have for any part of SIMCON.  Also, stay tuned for information about the t-shirts.

Some of you are aware that this is my last semester at UofR, so this has been my last SIMCON has an administrator.  This will likely be my last announcement on this website, but that doesn’t mean I’m done forever.  I hope to make some event posts for future SIMCON’s, and I look forward to seeing all of you at SIMCON again from somewhere other than behind the registration desk!

Thanks for being the very best,

SIMCON XXXVII: Helpful Reminders

SIMCON XXXVII will begin tomorrow (Friday) at 5:00PM!  It’s time to get excited!

Just like last year, SIMCON will be held in the Wilson Commons Building on the University of Rochester campus.  You can reach Wilson Commons from the outside (look for a building with a big glass window-wall behind Rush Rhees Library, the big building with the dome) or through the tunnels.  Check for SIMCON signs on the doors to the library.  The registration desk will be on the 2nd floor in Hirst Lounge (also known as Flag Lounge because of all the flags hanging from the ceiling).  The parking lots closest to Wilson Commons are Library Lot and Intercampus Lot.  Parking will be free starting at 7:00PM for the entire campus.  Check the Directions page for more information and a map handy for navigating campus.

The registration desk will only be able to accept cash, but there is an ATM nearby.  The food venues in Wilson Commons can accept both cash and credit cards.

Preregistration is still open until 4:59PM on Friday.  Also, don’t forget to reserve a space in any events you are interested in joining.

I’d like to give a big thank you in advance to everyone who has supported SIMCON both this year and all the other years.  We’re so proud to run this convention and bring together gamers from all over.  I hope everyone has a great time at the con.

Event Registration is Now Closed

Event registration is now closed.  No new events may be added, however all users still have the power to edit their own events.

Over the course of the week, I will be sending out emails to people who have registered 6 hours worth of events and thereby qualify for a GM pass.  I will also be checking to make sure events fit within the timeslot guidelines.  You may receive an email from me if I have any questions about your event with regards to bookings, time, space required, etc.  If you need a specific space for your event (ex. a board game that specifically needs a round table), please feel free to email me at if I don’t confirm it myself.

Thank you to everyone who has registered events!  Don’t forget to preregister for a con badge here if you have not yet done so.

Game Auction on BGG

We are holding an auction for our old board games and war games on  These are old games belonging to the club that simply don’t get played anymore, so we are trying to sell them to make room for new games.  There are also a few newer games at the end of the list.  You can check out the auction here:

In order to bid on an item, you’ll have to make a BGG account and then comment on the item you want.  The auction will end sometime between 6:00PM and 11:00PM on Sunday, March 22 (this is to prevent sniping).  Any games you’ve won can be picked up and paid for at SIMCON.

The games we don’t sell through the auction will be for sale at SIMCON, but it’ll be first-come, first-serve, so if you really want a game your best bet is to bid on it here.

Thanks for reading.  You can email me at if you have any questions.  Event registration ends on Sunday!

Event Registration is Now Active

Event registration has been enabled for all users.  Events can be registered until 11:59PM on March 15.  You MUST have an account to register an event on the site.

This year, we are implementing an event block schedule to help reduce event overlap.  When registering your event, please register it within one of the following event blocks:

Friday, March 27 5:00PM-9:00PM
Friday, March 27 9:00PM-1:00AM
Saturday, March 28 11:00AM-3:00PM
Saturday, March 28 3:00PM-7:00PM
Saturday, March 28 8:00PM-12:00AM
Sunday, March 29 11:00AM-3:00PM
Sunday, March 29 3:00PM-7:00PM

Your event does not have to start at the beginning of a block, but it should not extend past the end of a block.  These times are also listed on the New Event form.

Also, a reminder to all users that you MUST enable Bookings for your event to allow other users to sign up for your event online.  This is the best way to let users know how many people can play in your game.

As always, email me at with any questions.  We recently had trouble with the reCAPTCHA for new users trying to register, so let me know if you encounter any problems.

Summer Greetings and Security Updates

Hello to all, from SIMCON!

Since an official post was never made, I’d like to say thank you to everyone who supported SIMCON this past year.  It’s thanks to you that we can continue to hold this convention and try to improve it every year.  One of our top priorities is inventing a weather machine so snowstorms stop bothering us in late March.

As of now, we are busy planning for next year’s SIMCON.  We do not yet have a date or theme confirmed, but you can expect it to be held during one of the last weekends in March (the 20th-22nd or 27th-29th).  Of course, we will update the site as soon as we have more details confirmed.

On a different note, since the summer began this website has been attracting a number of spam users.  We have installed some extra security software to help cut back on new spam users registering and to clean out our user database.  I have already begun deleting users who have been identified as spammers.

I am trying to be careful and make sure no actual users are deleted, but there’s always a chance that a real person could be reported as spam, either as an existing user or during account registration.  Therefore, if you find that your account is wrongfully deleted or you are blocked from registering for the site, please let me know and I can resolve the issue.  My email is  Hopefully, we can clear our user database of all spammers before event registration opens up again later in the year.

Thank you all for reading.  Have a wonderful summer!

Hours of Operation Update + Things to Know

SIMCON quickly approaches!  Here are a few tips and updates to help maximize your SIMCON experience.

Firstly, our hours of operation have changed slightly.  Unfortunately, we could not keep the entire Wilson Commons building on reserve for all of Sunday.  The registration desk, vendors area, and open board gaming areas will begin to pack up starting at 5:00PM.  For users who have registered events that run until 6:00PM, you will still have reserved space for your game!  However, all other con functions will end at 5:00PM.

SIMCON will still officially start at 5:00PM on Friday in the Wilson Commons Building.  See the Directions page for a map and parking info.  You can also find a map of the campus tunnel system, which will let you get from Rush Rhees Library (the domed building that is closest to the parking lots) to Wilson Commons without going outside.  Look for signs in Rush Rhees to help you get to the Registration Desk via the tunnels.

You will find the registration desk on the 2nd floor in Hirst Lounge (also known as Flag Lounge).  Note that the tunnels will lead you to the 3rd floor of Wilson Commons.  We will be accepting cash and URos/Flex (if you are a UofR student).  If you are short on cash, there is also an ATM on the 2nd floor.  Also note that all food sold in Wilson Commons can be bought with cash or credit.

Hirst Lounge will be the center of SIMCON.  There you will find the SIMCON registration tables + merchandise, the vendors, and Magic: The Gathering and Warhammer events.

Overlooking Hirst Lounge two floors above is Bridge Lounge.  Bridge Lounge will host open gaming run by some of our special guests.

Havens Lounge is about half a staircase down from Bridge Lounge, and will have tables for board/card game events and extra room for open board gaming.  Havens is the best location if you want to relax and sit somewhere.

Many user events will have their own conference rooms somewhere in the Wilson Commons Building.  There will be references in the con booklets to help you find your room, and you can always ask a member of the SIMCON staff for help.

Remember that Preregistration is still open!  Preregistering yourself for a badge will automatically save you $2 on badge price!  Also, event bookings are still enabled.  Preregistration and event bookings will stay open until 4:59PM on Friday, March 28.
