Why UR Habitat?

With many organizations approaching you for donations, you may be wondering what makes the University of Rochester branch of Habitat for Humanity worthy of your support.  Below are three reasons that should build your confidence in our organization:

1. Building a home for a family in need

The mission of Habitat for Humanity is to eliminate substandard housing.  We work toward this goal one home, and one family at a time.  Flower City Habitat builds between nine and eleven houses annually in the Rochester area. Habitat is needed now more then ever, as affordable housing is out of reach for many:

There are three main reasons for the affordable housing crisis in America: the rise in home construction costs, the decrease in wages, and the loss of millions of affordable apartments during the past 20 years.

Children need a safe, warm place to do their homework, eat nutritious meals, and simply be kids.  Parents are proud to own their own home, and are inspired to work through hardships.

2. Building a stronger community

Many of the neighborhoods where Habitat builds houses have previously been beaten down by drug activity, uncaring landlords and transient tenants. The arrival of Flower City Habitat for Humanity homeowners is often only the beginning of neighborhood renewal and gentrification.  Parents sit on the front porch to watch the neighborhood children play, and keep them safe.  The pride they have in their home inspires them to keep it clean and welcoming. They care about their neighborhood, discourage illegal behavior, and help to turn the area around.

3. Building stronger citizens

For most students it is easy to forget that there is a world off campus, but the experience of building a house allows Habitat members to meet, work with, and learn to understand the problems of people who aren’t just concerned with studying for their next midterm.  Working towards a positive common goal often turns out to be a significant bonding experience, bringing students and community members closer together and helping them to embrace diversity. By participating in Habitat service activities and working with people they wouldn’t normally meet, UR Chapter members get a more accurate view of life outside academia. Students in Habitat gain a sense of their roles in a larger environment and of how they can positively impact the lives of others. They retain these views beyond college and bring them into the workforce.  We hope that by giving our members such an involved experience as planning and building a home from the ground up, Habitat will become an important part of their lives as they continue in whatever community they find themselves in after graduating.
