Who are we?
University of Rochester Solar Splash is a group of students who are committed to designing, building, and racing a solar-powered electric boat. Our group emphasizes learning and practicing engineering skills through hands-on construction and real-world application of theory learned in the classroom. We are raising money to further our ability to purchase the required tools and materials needed to construct an efficient and competitive boat for this year’s Solar Splash solar boat race. Please help us advance the reality of solar powered vehicles by spreading the word about our campaign and by donating if you can!
What we do
Solar Splash is an international, intercollegiate competition with some of the world’s leading universities competing. The competition consists of three races: sprint, endurance, and slalom. Each of these races tests different characteristics of the boat, such as acceleration, durability, and maneuverability. Participating in the competition gives us:
- the drive to put forth our best effort in engineering a premier boat
- real-time problem-solving and engineering experience
- the opportunity to interact with students pursuing similar interests at other top engineering schools
Our goals for this campaign:
This year, we aim to use our funds raised to purchase new batteries, propellers, and outboard motor components for our new boat design. We will also be manufacturing a new boat hull, of our own custom design, using cedar strip. Our organization is excited to tackle new engineering challenges this year and being successful in our competition this summer!
The team at the 2016 championships in Dayton
Our “pickle fork trimaran” that won both “Outstanding Hull Design” and “Outstanding System Design” from IEEE-PELS
Our Visual Display that won First Place. Check it out on the first floor of Rettner!
We will be updating our campaign as we move along with our build process and as we reach milestones in the campaign! Stay Posted!
