Mount Marcy

"upper level"

Marcy

This upper level trip will take 8 freshmen to the top of Mount Marcy, located in the Adirondacks.  The trail to the peak (and back to camp) will be traversed in a day using daypacks.  On the way to the peak, scenic overlooks provide magnificent views of the surrounding park and the glaciated terrain of New York.  Finally, a short scramble over rocky, lichen covered terrain brings the crew to the cloud kissed peak of Marcy.  At 5,344 feet above sea level this mountain is the highest peak in New York.  While this rewarding trek can be physically challenging at times, our main goal is for you to have fun, not push you to the limits!  No technical skills or previous hiking experience are needed for this trip!

Steve Rosen (’10) and Zoë Harrold (’08) will be leading the Mt. Marcy Trip

Phelps Mountain

"intermediate level"

Phelps

On the Phelps Trip, 8 freshmen will be exposed to the beauty of the Adirondack Park. Phelps is a High Peak, standing at 4,161 feet high. Freshmen should expect spectacular views and great opportunities to bond with upperclassmen leaders and their new freshmen classmates. The group will camp at Marcy Dam for the nights before and after the hike up Mount Phelps. The hike itself is less strenuous than the Marcy climb, while still offering gorgeous views of the surroundings. No camping or hiking experience necessary!

Peggy Mayo ('09) and Chris Jensen ('10) will be leading the Phelps Trip

Waterfalls of New York

"easiest level"

This UR FOOT trip will take 7 freshmen on three day hikes through Stony Brook State Park, and Watkins Glen State Park and the Niagara Gorge.  Each day will be a new take on the New York wilderness as we experience hiking trails, woodlands, gorges, and even the occasional swimming pool. We will travel to the Finger Lakes in Watkins Glen, NY as well as to Castile and Niagara Falls (only the American side).  This trip is the least demanding of our three and great for anyone who wants to get out and enjoy Western New York's beautiful surroundings. Housing will be provided on-campus at University of Rochester.

Erica Greenbaum ('10), Andrew Flack ('09), and Doug Butler ('10) will be leading the Waterfalls Trip.
