For international Free Hug Day, we stood outside Wilson Commons with signs and gave out hugs to about 40. It celebrated the campaign started by Juan Mann that hugs are awesome. Around every other Sunday 1:30-4 PM we visit this home for the elderly. There are different activities planned every time: making teddy bears to donate to kids at Strong Hospital, pet therapy with cats and dogs, playing bingo, and having themed parties. Be the Change Day - 29 September At 10:15 AM we met on the hall to walk over to Wilson Commons for a free brunch and T-shirt, then we were bused over to Foodlink to sort food and other goods until 3:30. Then we ate a free lunch (which included some of the food we sorted =) and were bused back to campus. The 300 students who participated completed as much work as one Foodlink worker completes in one year! Making Strides Against Breast Cancer - 30 September We're forming a team to participate in this annual 2 mile walk at Frontier Walk. The walk starts at 10 AM and transportation will be provided! The university hosts a regional qualifier for FIRST Lego League, a national engineering competition for kids. We built certain objects of Legos according to very specific instructions, and in the competition the kids use their robots to manipulate the objects. The theme this year is power, so all the objects have to do with different kinds of power, eg. solar, water, etc. And it’s Legos!! Can you say awesome? For
this annual event, we were invited to come and table. MIF was kind enough to lend us their popcorn
machine and we provided the popcorn and oil for free to the athletes and
parents at Olympics. Though we got off
to a rough start, we successfully gave away all of our popcorn and had a
grand time! |

Al
Sigl WalkAbout – 21 October This annual walk benefits the Al Sigl Center, which is
affiliates with lots of charities like the Rochester Hearing and Speech
Center and the Epilepsy Foundation.
This year the walk will take place at Marketplace Mall. The walk starts at 9:30 AM, we’ll meet on
the hall at 8:45 to drive over. And
we’ll be sporting our new Tiernan banner! Our biggest single community service event of the
year! We’re aiming to have 100 underprivileged
kids in Douglass (plus parents and representatives from the agencies). Volunteers are needed from 10 AM-7 PM; the
actual party is 12-5. We’ll have food,
games, and performances from UR groups, followed by trick-or-treating in Sue
B, Hoeing, and Crosby. |
