Memory Walk - 16 September
This walk benefit the Alzheimer's Association. We volunteered between 7 AM and 1 PM in shifts and helped set up tents by decorating and blowing up balloons and laying out t-shirts on the table. During the walk, we helped hand out water bottles.
This annual 5K run/walk benefits the Anthony Center for Women's Leadership and the Susan B. Anthony House. The registration fee to participate was $12, Elaina collected donations from member of the hall and ran; other Tiernanites helped
Be the Change Day - 30 September We met in Hirst Lounge and ate free bagels and juice at the crack of noon before buses shuttled us off to the 19th Ward where we helped in a city clean-up and found some very interesting things. Everyone who came to this ADITI-sponsored event was rewarded with a vibrant orange t-shirt and a free lunch.
Every other Tuesday afternoon (every other Friday in the spring) we participated in tutoring at St. Boniface Elementary with the Education Alliance. We tutored them for the first half and for the second half, we'd go to the gym and play volleyball, basketball, etc. These kids are amazing! It was also fun to have an excuse to play jumprope.
Around every other Sunday 1:30-4 PM we visit this home for the elderly. There are different activities planned every time: making teddy bears to donate to kids at Strong Hospital, pet therapy with cats and dogs, playing bingo, and having various themed parties.
Our biggest community service event of the fall semester! This party serves disadvantaged children from the Rochester community. About 62 children came in costume to Douglass Dining Center, which was very decorated in Halloween style. There were games, face-painting, pizza, pumpkin painting, and children were taken trick-or-treating around the dorms of Sue B. The haunted hallway was a big success (the kids loved Tony's scaring tactics). The Strong Jugglers and PIG also entertained the kids once we calmed them down enough to watch!
Foodlink is a foodbank, a big warehouse that receives donations of all kinds of things: food (which is past its sell-by date so it can't be sold but it's still good), clothes, personal hygiene products, etc. and distributes them to places that need them, like shelters. For a couple hours, we help sort whatever they need us to. Gifts for the Giving - 3 December For this annual gift drive, we donated gifts for boys and girls of specific age groups. We went over to the George Eastman House to view an exhibit on the Darfur Genocide and attended a service.
Community Service Week - 12-18 February Our first annual! All of the events were open to everyone and were designed to get the UR community involved.
We tabled in Douglass all week and asked people to buy things from the Corner Store and donate them. They wanted to get rid of their declining, so it was win-win! We raised 120 lbs of food for Foodlink!! Friends Helping Friends - 12, 18 February Friends Helping Friends (aka Rochester Food not Bombs) provides many services to the Rochester community. We helped out in their bike shop doing light construction. For this annual event, we buy baby-related items (or other basic necessities like toothpaste, soap, etc.) and throw a shower in the Burton 1 lounge with lots of food and games! We played Apples to Apples and made cards for kids and moms of Alternatives for Battered Women (where we donated the gifts to). Every year, someone is designated "pregnant." This year it was John Skwiersky. Sexual Assault Prevention - 8 March As part of a campus-wide campaign, we bought shirts and wore them on this day to prevent sexual assault. The shirts said "Sex Wanted: Inquire Within," the underlying message being that you should always ask. |
