Sojourner House - 18 September

The Sojourner House, a home for women and children, needs help 5-6 people to help clearing out their old basement. Wear appropriate clothing for the trip. The precise times aren't known yet, but a interest sheet will be passed around at the meeting and the time will be emailed to all those who expressed interest.

Scarecrow Festival - 9 October

We are volunteering at the Scarecrow Festival, an annual fair with scarecrow and hay bale sculptures, pumpkin painting, a burlap maze, face-painting, and petting zoo.

This event is a riot for kids, making our jobs essentially riot control. Tiernanites performed variuos functions, including directing traffic in the parking lots. For the most part, we helped out with arts and crafts - face paining (awesome designs by Jill and Yurely), making "homemade" microwave popcorn, and painting pumpkins. Katye additionally got to help the kids get those functions, spending the afternoon guarding the pumpkin patch and watching kids carry pumpkins bigger than their heads.

Breast Cancer Walk - 17 October

At the annual walk to benefit breast cancer research, "Making Strides", Tiernanites volunteered as route marshalls very early in the morning in amazingly cold weather. For directing traffic and braving the weather, they were rewarded with amazingly bright orange free T-shirts and a crate full of delicious apples that are living in the lounge, for any who so desires to enjoy.

ZooBoo - 24 October

The ZooBoo is an annual "merry not scary" event at Seneca Park Zoo. Last year we asked kids riddles on a scavenger hunt, where they had to identify the animal in the riddle (and then got to see it right behind them) to get some candy, a kind of educational trick-or-treating. This year should be equally fun, and we get to dress in costumes.

Halloween Party - 30 October

Our biggest community service event of the year! This party serves disadvantaged children from the Rochester community. Children come in costume to theTiernan Community Room, which is very decorated in Halloween style. There will be games, face-painting, pizza, a haunted hallway, and children will be taken trick-or-treating around the dorms of the Quad. Setup runs pretty much all day.

Al Sigl Center Just One Campaign - 11 February

The Al Sigl Center runs a donation drive every year requesting that people send "just one" dollar. This generates a ton of envelopes, most containing just that one dollar. Our job will be to go through envelopes, piling the money received and placing notes to one side. Competitions are had for whoever gets the most money, the largest donation, etc. It's also a great way to sit and talk to each other around a table.
