So what's the deal with sailing?

How can I get involved with the team?

The easiest way to get involved is to get yourself on the mailing list. We send out frequent e-mails about upcoming team events, practices, and regattas. Another way to get involved is to go to practices. To sign up for our mailing list you can either go to the CCC Website or send an e-mail to Katie Luly.

Is the sailing team a varsity team or a club team?

We are currently a club team. However, UR has plenty of opportunities to excel. Should the sailing team improve over the years, there will be a definite possiblity of becoming a varsity team.

Do I have to pay?

Yes. Our dues are $120 for the full year, or $80 for the fall and $60 for the spring. Your dues include: all of your practices, MAISA and ICSA fees, transportation to and from practices and regattas, and subsidized sailing club clothing products. We also offer a free practice for those who are undecided on whether or not they want to join the team.

Does UR offer sailing scholarships?

No. Scholarships granted based on sailing ability are prohibited by the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association of North America guidelines.

How often do you practice?

It is possible to practice every weekday. However, mandatory practices are Friday and Saturday plus a workout at least once a week.

Will I be able to go to regattas?

Regattas are open to anyone that expresses interest. We like to send as many people as we can to regattas. Because of the nature of the sport, only 4 people are needed at a regatta, but we often send more as alternates, and everyone always ends up getting out on the water. This year we will be encouraging skipper/crew pairs so that people feel comfortable out on the water with whomever they will be sailing with at regattas.

Do you have a coach?

Yes we do! His name is Jon Faudree and he is pretty amazing. At practices, Jon does a chalk talk before hitting the water. He also tries his best to come to as many regattas as he can.

Do I have to try out?

No. We are open to any UR student who is interested, regardless of skill level. Many of our sailors had no previous experience, but we also have coaches and several experienced members who can help those wishing to learn.
