Experience Eastman

Experience Eastman LogoLaunched in Summer 2009, the Experience Eastman program is an effort to more closely integrate the University of Rochester River Campus and the Eastman School of Music. The Students’ Association believes that both campuses offer incredible events, and that the student body should be aware of and be able to take advantage of all that each campus has to offer. Thus, the Experience Eastman program is especially focused on spreading awareness on the River Campus about events taking place at the Eastman School of Music. The theory behind this program relies on the idea that the two campuses may be diverse and geographically separated, but nevertheless, they belong to a University of One.

How it works
Student Organizations adapt a current event or design a new program concept which meets the goals of the Experience Eastman Program. Sponsoring organizations are responsible for funding their portion (sponsorship) of the event but may seek additional funding through a request to the Students’ Association Appropriations Committee (SAAC).

The role of the Experience Eastman Coordinator is to bring the two campuses, River Campus and the Eastman Campus, closer together. This takes the form in working with the Eastman School of Music, publicizing Eastman School events, and finding new and innovative ways to encourage River Campus participation in Eastman activities.

Eastman and River Campus SA Leaders with Dean Paul Burgett

River Campus and Eastman SA Leaders pose for a photo with Vice President Dean Paul Burgett after an effective brainstorming session aimed at better connecting the two campuses.

Last week, a group of Student Government leaders from the River Campus and the Eastman School of Music met for dinner to broadly discuss strategies for connecting our campuses.  Many River Campus students are interested in getting more involved at Eastman, and many Eastman students are interested in spending more time on the River Campus.

The dinner was hosted by Vice President Dean Paul Burgett, who offered great insight on the history of the campuses and offered suggestions to bring them together.  Also in attendance were Anne-Marie Algier, Associate Dean of Students and Director of Wilson Commons Student Activities on the River Campus as well as Jason Smith, Assistant Dean for Student Life at Eastman.  Both offered valuable suggestions as we work toward this shared goal.

A wide range of ideas came out of this meeting, and the leaders of both campuses are looking forward to continuing to meet.  Look out for programs and events this year that bring Eastman students and River Campus students together!  For more information on what we are already working on, check out the Experience Eastman page.
