Dining Services LogoThis year in special needs dining there have already been great strides in helping dining services be more accommodating to those that have dietary restrictions.  First of all soy ice cream is now available in the corner store. Besides getting new foods on campus, we are also working on communication with the student body.  The SA Projects & Services Committee is hosting a focus group on Decemeber 1st to address the needs of religious groups, those with allergies, vegetarians, etc.  Anybody interested in participating or voicing their opinion can contact the SA Special Needs Dining Representative, Leah Spungen, (lspungen@u.rochester.edu) or Christina Hoh (hoh-christina@aramark.com), Dining’s Dietetic Intern.

Sustainability Tip #2: Go green and hit the switch! Turn off your lights if you’re leaving your room for more than ten minutes. This it won’t affect the light bulb’s life span, and the energy really adds up. Also, by saving energy you could be helping your dorm win money and prizes from UR Unplugged, an energy saving competition going on for the next four weeks.  Stay tuned for more energy conservation tips next week!

BusDo you like the current operations of Parking and Transportation? Have any ideas on how to improve either one? Want to voice your opinion? This Monday, October 26th from 7:30-9:30 P.M., there will be a Parking and Transportation focus group headed by Glen Sicard, the Director of Transportation, and George Guider the Supervisor for River Campus Parking Operations. This is a great opportunity to voice any comments or questions you might have concerning parking and transportation at the U of R. I know that some of you may disagree with parking policies, and may desire more frequent shuttle service. Some of you may be fully satisfied with the current operation of transportation and parking on campus. This focus group is designed to field all of these responses, and to hopefully gather constructive student input to make transportation and parking more efficient. So please come on October 26th to help enhance student life! The meeting will occur at the UR Parking Offices in Fauver Stadium from 7:30PM – 9:30PM.

Also in the works is a new discount Taxi program to potentially replace the current Sponosored Taxi Service.  If you have thoughts about Taxis and the University, please fill out this short online survey, or send us your thoughts.

Walk for Dark Success

Published on September 24, 2009 at 5:24pm by Eric Weissmann in Sustainability

Last spring, the Student Sustainability Council (SSC) held the first ever “Walk for Dark.” Groups of students walked the campus and analyzed buildings on campus that had lights on at various points of the night. The goal was to convey to University Facilities information on buildings that used to much energy by having unnecessary lights on at night. If you are interested in the results, check out the report.  Last week, Megan Dewitt (the SA Sustainability Coordinator) received a letter from Eris Oleksyn in University Facilities & Services.  He explained how useful the report was and that he looks forward to continuing to work with the SA toward the common goal of sustainability. Read his letter here. Great work Megan!
