The Facts:

ROC the Raas has arrived! Bringing the campus a fantastic flair of Indian style dance since 2006, they have been continuing to give us something to talk about. Originating in the Indian state of Gujarat, Raas fuses dandiya and garba. Dandiya is a style of dance done with two sticks in which a partner’s sticks are usually struck, and garba is a dance generally done in a circle and the movements are repeated. ROC the Raas is a group that competes as well as hosts cultural events. This year, ROC the Raas placed second in Muqabla, a dance competition at SUNY Buffalo that features Indian performance groups and allows them to compete. Last year ROC the Raas placed first.  They also host events such as TundRaas, which is an annual Indian dance festival.

The Communications & Public Relations Committee has been hard at work ensuring that the Students’ Association’s work is publicized to the undergraduate student body. One of the methods now employed by the SA is Rocky’s Report: a monthly e-newsletter sent out by the SA President, Eric Weissmann, to students that breaks down the SA’s work by committee and branch.

I encourage ALL of you to read Rocky’s Report and give us your feedback! The more comments we get from you, the better the SA can cater to your needs!

View the November issue of Rocky’s Report via the SA website or via your Rochester email, and take the time to read and address what you feel should change on campus!

The Experience Eastman program has an exciting new addition…the first SAAC e-Form. Student organizations can now apply for Supplemental Funds through this new Experience Eastman e-Form. Groups may use an Experience Eastman program to suffice the ‘Eastman Interraction’ question on their Midyear Report. Read more…

Experience Eastman Supplemental Form

This program, launched in 2009, is an effort to more closely integrate the University of Rochester River Campus and the Eastman School of Music. The theory behind this program relies on the idea that the two campuses may be diverse and geographically separated, but nevertheless, they belong to a University of One.

Please contact Ben Pollack at ben.pollack@rochester.edu with any questions or contact information for student leaders at the Eastman School of Music.

The Facts:

The D’Lion Organization is one of the treasures of undergraduate student life at the University of Rochester. With its long history  (over 50 years) at the University, the organization has established itself as an essential component of promoting community spirit within the residence halls and the University as a whole.  D’Lions decorate halls, help celebrate residents’ birthdays, as well as organize and run various events.  As a service organization they respond to the needs of the community and to those of the individual.

What to Expect:

Located on freshman halls, D’Lions are responsible for promoting hall spirit and creating a comfortable living atmosphere. They accomplish this by planning programs and decorating, among other things.

Throughout campus the D’Lion organization sponsors multiple blood drives as well as many other community service projects including helping out on Wilson Day. They aim to create programs that the entire campus can take part in.

Eastman and River Campus SA Leaders with Dean Paul Burgett

River Campus and Eastman SA Leaders pose for a photo with Vice President Dean Paul Burgett after an effective brainstorming session aimed at better connecting the two campuses.

Last week, a group of Student Government leaders from the River Campus and the Eastman School of Music met for dinner to broadly discuss strategies for connecting our campuses.  Many River Campus students are interested in getting more involved at Eastman, and many Eastman students are interested in spending more time on the River Campus.

The dinner was hosted by Vice President Dean Paul Burgett, who offered great insight on the history of the campuses and offered suggestions to bring them together.  Also in attendance were Anne-Marie Algier, Associate Dean of Students and Director of Wilson Commons Student Activities on the River Campus as well as Jason Smith, Assistant Dean for Student Life at Eastman.  Both offered valuable suggestions as we work toward this shared goal.

A wide range of ideas came out of this meeting, and the leaders of both campuses are looking forward to continuing to meet.  Look out for programs and events this year that bring Eastman students and River Campus students together!  For more information on what we are already working on, check out the Experience Eastman page.

Rain or shine, President Seligman celebrates Fill Fauver Football with SA Vice President Brittany Crowley and Former Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Bob Witmer.

Congratulations to the ‘Jackets Varsity Football team on a thrilling game this past Saturday (Sept. 26th), despite their loss in the last 10 seconds of the game.

On the sunnier-side of things, the Students’ Association’s Fill Fauver Coordinators (sophomores Jesse Cramer and Trey Socash) held another very successful Fill Fauver event, which was sponsored and staffed by the Campus Activities Board.

Thanks to everyone who came out to show their support!  Let’s keep the enthusiasm coming!

Changes to Alcohol Policy

Published on September 24, 2009 at 9:56pm by Eric Weissmann in Office of the President

As many of you are aware, a number of changes and reinforcements were made to the Student Code of Conduct (specifically the Alcohol Policy) and the Event Registration Process.   Student Government has been working closely with the Dean of Students Office to convey the concerns of the student body.  One point that we conveyed was that students felt uninformed about exactly what changes were made, why they were made, and who was involved in the decision to change them.

After several weeks of discussions with myself and other student government leaders, Dean Burns decided today that he would make time available in the next week to meet with students in small groups to discuss the policy changes and reinforcements.   He explained this process and his reasoning in a letter to me today, which you can read here (PDF).

If you would like to meet with Dean Burns to discuss your concerns with the policies, please call the Office of the Dean of Students at 585-275-4085 to schedule an appointment in the below time slots.  I encourage you to take advantage of this— it is important for students to convey feedback directly to Dean Burns.  He will be meeting with groups of up to 15 students at a time.  Below are the dates, times and locations of these meetings.

Date Time Location
Friday, September 25 4:30pm to 6:30pm Wilson Commons 503
Saturday, September 26 10:00am to 11:30am Wilson Commons 507
Saturday, September 26 12:00pm to 1:30pm Wilson Commons 507
Monday, September 28 4:00pm to 5:30pm Wilson Commons 507
Tuesday, September 29 5:00pm to 6:30pm Wilson Commons 507
Wednesday, September 30 5:00pm to 6:30pm Wilson Commons 507
Thursday, October 1 5:00pm to 6:30pm Wilson Commons 507
Thursday, October 1 7:00pm to 9:00pm Wilson Commons 507

As always, your Students’ Association Government is continually working hard for you.  If you have any feedback or comments on this or any other issue, do not hesitate to leave a comment below, email Eric at sapres@mail.rochester.edu or leave feedback on our website.
