Strong-Arm Robbery Near Residence Quad

Published on October 31, 2008 at 4:14pm by Rocky in General

A male undergraduate student was the victim of a strong-arm robbery early Friday morning, October 31, 2008, at about 12:45 am as he walked to his Residence Quad room from Dandelion Square. Two male suspects called out to him as the student reached the stairs between Burton and Crosby. The victim thought they were fellow college students and approached them. They were wearing dark hooded sweatshirts and blue jeans.

The suspects directed the student to walk with them through the Residence Quad to the pedestrian/bike path along the Genesee River under threat of harm. Once there the suspects demanded his money. The student surrendered his cash. He was then directed to walk along the path [towards Towers] as the suspects fled in an unknown direction. No weapon was displayed or used. The student was not injured.

The victim returned to his residence hall and Security was notified shortly thereafter. Rochester Police were contacted. The surrounding area was checked but the suspects were not located.

CCTV images recorded around the time of the event, as well as earlier in the evening, are being checked – to help determine when the suspects came onto campus and, hopefully, to obtain good video images.

Security patrols have been adjusted to maintain a ready presence along Wilson Boulevard from 7 pm to 3 am until further notice. The lower level field lights for Fauver Stadium will be turned on through the night hours.

If you believe you may have information, please call University Security at x5-3333. As you go about your daily activities we encourage everyone to remain alert to your surroundings. Please call the University’s Crime Prevention Office at x5-2220 with any questions or dial x5-3333 and ask to speak with an on-duty Security supervisor.

This notice and any updates will be posted on the University Security web page: http://www.security.rochester.edu/

Chicken Salad for the masses

Published on October 29, 2008 at 10:43pm by Rocky in General

After many complaints about the new chicken salad at the beginning of this year, Dining Services brought back the old chicken salad that we Rochester students know and love. The reason they had switched in the first place was because there always seemed to be a chicken salad shortage last year. The best solution to this problem was to use a separate vendor to produce the chicken salad. Unfortunately, the new kind was sub par and many students complained. Because dining services cares and is very receptive to student’s complaints, they got rid of the new chicken salad. Dining services knows that there is still an issue with it running out, but there really is not anything they can do about it. It’s either have the bad kind, or run out more often. I personally am willing to deal with the shortage in order to have the delicious kind. They also try to put up a sign to let students know when the chicken salad has run out so they do not wait in line, get to the front and find out there is not any left. If anyone has any complaints or comments about Douglass please contact me, Dale Levine at dale.levine@rochester.edu.

Happy Monday.

This week: The Crooked Fiddle Band

Hailing from Sydney Australia, this band is still pretty new on the scene. As of now one of the only ways to get either of their two EPs is through Itunes-but I highly recommend giving them a listen.
Combining almost every type of folk music possible-the Crooked Fiddle Band are one of the more unique bands I have heard recently. Led by very fierce fiddling, the band plays with the intensity that rivals some rock bands. Their website probably puts it best, calling the band a maker of “a steaming cauldron of original and trad-inspired world music”. Combine that with your notion of gypsy music, metal, bluegrass, and even some taints of Irish folk and you have the basic idea. They just released their second EP which follows in the first footsteps of giving both heavy hitting tracks and lovely slow ballads. Check them out, and be prepared to be taken on a musical ride across genres, styles, and energy.

Tracks to check out: The Butcher of Bessarabia and The Rom Rebellion

In Case you missed it…

Former front man of Florida based punk act Hot Water Music, Chuck Ragan, and his crew of folk rockers tore through Rochester a few weeks ago on the first annual Revival Tour. Playing at Waterstreet Music Hall, both an easy taxi ride and not to far off the Red Line from Campus, each artist took turns playing through their own repertoire of tunes. Mixing rock, folk, and country together, the show was an absolute blast. Check each of these guys out, but Chuck Ragan’s Feast or Famine is a worthy addition to any fan of music’s collection. The tour also just put out a new song and a video, so check it out below.
Don’t miss any of these guys next time they come through Rochester. Check them all out on myspace or go to http://www.chuckraganmusic.com/

Description: live performances from the first half of the tour. featuring Chuck Ragan of Hot Water Music, Ben Nichols of Lucero, Tim Barry of Avail, John Gaunt, Digger Barnes, and Todd Beene.

Special Guests including Austin Lucas, Jesse Malin of D generation, Frank Turner, and Chris McCaughen of Sundowner

Enjoy,

Todd Theatre Presents: “You Can’t Take It With You”

Published on October 24, 2008 at 12:36am by Rocky in General

Since its 1936 Broadway debut, You Can’t Take It With You has entered the cannon of classic American plays and the hearts of audiences the world over. George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart’s Pulitzer Prize winning comedy uproariously lifts the lid on American individualism, and celebrates both the truth of love and the love of being true to oneself. Complete with snakes, kittens, and an onstage band, UR guest artist Susanna Gellert re-imagines this classic for the YouTube generation and the 21st century.

This is a show you do not want to miss! Be sure to get your tickets for Saturday’s (10/25) performance at 8PM. Friday’s performance is already sold out! Tickets are $6 for students and are being sold at the Common Market.
