Walk for Facilities

Published on December 07, 2008 at 8:00am by Rocky in General

Are you ever frustrated by aging effects of your residence hall? Have you ever tripped on frozen puddles due to choppy sidewalks? Do you wish the campus were just plain better? The SA wants your help.

The SA Senate is coordinating the first ever Walk for Facilities. Similar to the biannual Walk for Light, this is an opportunity for students and university administrators to survey the campus together, evaluating potential improvements. In order to be effective, the SA needs your help in two ways:

  • Volunteers: We need volunteers to participate on the Walk. On Friday, December 12, there will be a pizza party for everybody involved beginning at 12:30. The Walk will commence at 1:00 P.M. Remember, there are no classes on the 12th.
  • Comments: Our priorities are made based on the number and severity of complaints and suggestions received from the student body. If you can’t make it to the Walk, we would still like to hear your thoughts!

Email co-coordinators Bradley Halpern or Alissa Brill, at bradley.halpern@rochester.edu and alissa.brill@rochester.edu with thoughts and comments or to volunteer. Thanks,

- Bradley Halpern ’12, Projects and Services Committee

UHS Update

Published on December 02, 2008 at 2:27pm by Rocky in General

This year, UHS has become bigger and better with a brand new facility right next to Sue B. URSHAC (University of Rochester Student Health Advisory Committee) and doctors/nurses of UHS have been working hard to listen to complaints/suggestions of the student body in order to make UHS a more positive experience for everyone. UHS is looking into finding an additional secretary to cut down on the amount of time students may spend on the phone to make appointments and ask questions. Also, look out for the new Monthly InSTALLment in the bathrooms to learn about tips that will make your UHS visit more productive and effective (things like remembering your insurance card)!

If have suggestions you’d like to make for UHS contact Stefanie Trop (strop@u.rochester.edu) or check out URSHAC meetings for yourself! All are welcome! Next meeting is Tuesday, December 2 at 5pm in the UHS building, room 220.

Increase in Organic and Local Food in the Dining Halls!

Published on December 02, 2008 at 2:26pm by Rocky in General

This year the dining services have done an excellent job in bringing local and organic foods into our dining halls. Here is a short list of what the local and organic foods are just so everyone can know where his or her food comes from!

~Cowlick Farm from the Finger Lakes area provides cheese and milk for the school.
~Upstate Niagara from Western New York provides Intense Milks, Upstate Farms, Wendts and Bison products.
~Freshlink Farms provides pesticide-free greens.
~Sugar Mountain Bake Shoppe has a booth at the Rochester Public Market and also supplies baked goods to the U of R.
~Little Bakery right from downtown Rochester provides baked goods made from local and natural ingredients.
~Lively Run Goat Dairy from the Finger Lake region makes preservative-free goat milk and goat cheese.
~Park Avenue Bakery from downtown Rochester distributes quality baked goods such as quiches and fruit pies.
~Beaver Lake Growers, D’Agostino Co-Op, Martens Companies, Bushwick Commission, Spring Water Sprouts, Red Jacket Orchards, Dimare Fresh Co-Op and Giorgio Mushroom are all local farms that provide in-season vegetables and fruits to the school. During the fall, fresh vegetables and fruits like squash, potatoes, corn, apples, tomatoes, and mushrooms are available.

Currently, 17% of the food purchased at the U of R is local or organic. Dining services is continually working to increase that percentage, making sure students get the healthiest and freshest foods. Next time you are in Douglas, Danforth, or the Pit, notice the food you are eating, because chances are, some of it is local and organic!

Check It Out: Course Evaluations

With spring course registration this week many may find themselves unsure of what classes to take this upcoming semester. Not sure which section of MTH 142 to sign up for? Torn between taking Love, Friendship and Community or Capoeira? Many may consult their friends or websites such as Ratemyprofessor.com during their decision making. However, the school provides an invaluable resource allowing all students to access previous year’s course evaluations online. By consulting course evaluations students can avoid bias and access the average class ratings from a much larger representative sample.

To access previous year’s results one should sign into Student UR Access Plus! which is accessible through the registrar http://www.rochester.edu/registrar. From there just sign in using your student id number and password, and click on “Online Student Course Evaluations (Fall 2007- Current)” on the left hand side bar. From there you can find out just which professors were rated most effective or which gave out the most work. Happy Registering!

Environmentally-friendly Rochester

Published on November 07, 2008 at 1:43am by Rocky in General

Did you ever think twice about handing over a few bucks for that Starbucks cup of tea or coffee? Well think again. The University of Rochester has started a mug refill program at all coffee providing areas on campus. That means that at Connections, Hillside, and Starbucks, Java City at the Pit, and Eastman locations, students can receive refills of tea or coffee for only 0.99 when they bring their own container. This effort to promote reusability in order to limit waste is one of UR’s many environmentally friendly programs. In addition to the mug refill program, the University has wind-powered residence buildings and buys our dining food from locally grown producers. These steps may seem small, but when it comes to the environment, every step counts in protecting its future.

A Senator’s Perspective…

Published on November 06, 2008 at 2:40am by Rocky in General

On October 31, 2008 all University of Rochester students received an e-mail from the Director of the University Security, relaying the robbery of a UR undergrad by two unknown men. The student had been walking to his residence quad dorm from Dandelion Square when the two men approached him. Luckily, the student was not hurt and was able to call security, who responded quickly. While it’s good to know that our security responds quickly when something like this occurs, many students have begun complaining that Security should not just be a reactionary force, but a preventative force. Most students are worried, but not alarmed, when a robbery occurs off-campus, but this robbery occurred on campus. It wasn’t even in a remote location of campus, but on the Residence Quad, a major center of our lives. Where was security on campus? Apparently, patrolling Wilson Boulevard in their cars is not enough protection against robberies. What happened to late night patrols on the main centers of the campus? Would it make a difference if there were a clearly visible station that security was posted at in the middle of campus? If security constantly patrols the Fraternity Quad on foot, why can’t they do the same on the rest of the campus? I like to think I’m safe when I walk from one side of campus to the other, but it may be time to start rethinking the standards we set for our security force.
