About the Team

The University of Rochester Club Ice Hockey Team was founded in 1999 by Awista Ayub ('02), and has since grown into an established club sport on campus. We are a competitive team, and we welcome players of all skill levels. Our home ice is the Genesee Valley Park Ice Rink near the University of Rochester River Campus. We practice from 7-8:30 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and play games on the weekends. We are a part of the Northeast Women's Collegiate Hockey Association (NEWCHA). Teams in our league are SUNY Brockport, Clarkson University, Colgate University, Cornell University, Niagara University, SUNY Oswego, Syracuse University, and William Smith College.

History of NEWCHA

In the Spring of 2002, there were no collegiate leagues in Upstate New York for women's club hockey. That summer, representatives from seven teams met to discuss the formation of a new league. From this meeting arose the Northeast Women's Collegiate Hockey Association (NEWCHA), with six founding teams: University of Rochester, SUNY Brockport, Clarkson University, North Country Community College, Elmira College, and Syracuse University. 2002-2003 marked the inaugural season of league. The 2003 inaugural NEWCHA league tournament was hosted by the University of Rochester here in Rochester.

2005-2006
NEWCHA's 4th season was marked by the addition of four new teams: Colgate University (Hamilton, NY); Cornell University (Ithaca, NY); SUNY Oswego (Oswego, NY); and William Smith College (Geneva, NY). We saw impressive performances at the 2005 NEWCHA Jamboree, hosted by Syracuse, where Cornell took the tournament with a 4-0 record.

2004-2005
NEWCHA's 3rd season saw a changing of the guard when top-ranked NCCC left the league to join the ACHA, and Niagara University joined to take their place. With five closely matched teams, it was a very exciting season. The first annual Fall Jamboree took place at Rochester, with Clarkson taking first place. The 2005 NEWCHA Championship tournament was held by Syracuse University, where the hosts managed to fend off Clarkson and Niagara to take their first league title. 2005's results were quite different than in the past: 1) Syracuse, 2) Niagara, 3) Clarkson, 4) Rochester, 5) Brockport.

2003-2004
NEWCHA's second season was marked by increasing intensity throughout the season, and an exciting 2004 league championship at the Olympic Center in Lake Placid, NY, hosted by NCCC. Results were very similar to 2003: 1) NCCC, 2) Clarkson University 3) Syracuse University 4) SUNY Brockport 5) University of Rochester (Elmira did not attend).
