Congratulations Dump and Run!

September 7, 2009

Dump and Run made over $900!

At the end of last year, Grassroots collected unwanted goods that students would otherwise throwaway. These items filled 2 U-Haul trucks! Half of the proceeds are donated to Planet Aid, who generously agreed to store these items over the summer, and the remaining half goes towards funding various Grassroots projects.  All unsold contributions were donated to Goodwill.

Internship Opportunity

August 13, 2009

The University of Rochester Medical Center is beginning construction on the new Clinical and Translational Sciences Building (CTSB).  We plan to pursue LEED Certification (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) for the design of this building. LEED is a green building certification system developed by the U.S. Green Building Council; it provides a framework for renovation and construction projects to gauge a building’s impact on the natural environment, awarding environmentally-sound practices with points on a rating system. We would like to engage a student intern in developing a vision for an educational feature that could contribute to the “Innovation in Design” LEED credit. Possible ideas could include a comprehensive “sustainable features” signage program, a model for monitoring energy use in the building, or a manual/case study of the CTSB that could be used to guide the planning and construction of future “green” buildings on the U of R campus. The intern’s
responsibility would be to work with URMC Facilities, Space Planning, the construction management team, and the CTSB architects to develop an idea for the LEED “Innovation in Design” Credit.

We would like to begin development on these ideas as soon as possible. The project will require about 2 months’ time at an effort of roughly 10 hours/week. We are interested in students that have had previous exposure to the LEED rating system or that have a general interest in sustainable design and/or environmental sustainability in general. Please contact Brooke Mayer at brooke_mayer@urmc.rochester.edu if you are interested or would like more information on this opportunity.
