Grassroots general meeting and Clothing ExchangeSeptember 7, 2009 Come to our first Grassroots meeting of the year tonight (September 7) at 8pm in the Ruth Merill Center! First CLOTHING EXCHANGE of the year this Thursday,
September 10. Congratulations Dump and Run!September 7, 2009 Dump and Run made over $900! At the end of last year, Grassroots collected unwanted goods that students would otherwise throwaway. These items filled 2 U-Haul trucks! Half of the proceeds are donated to Planet Aid, who generously agreed to store these items over the summer, and the remaining half goes towards funding various Grassroots projects. All unsold contributions were donated to Goodwill. Fall Activities FairSeptember 2, 2009 Check out our booth at the fall activities fair! Friday, Septermber 4 Internship OpportunityAugust 13, 2009 The University of
Rochester Medical Center is beginning
construction on
the new Clinical and Translational Sciences Building (CTSB).
We plan
to pursue LEED Certification (Leadership in Energy and Environmental
Design) for the design of this building. LEED is a green building
certification system developed by the U.S. Green Building Council; it
provides a framework for renovation and construction projects to gauge
a building’s impact on the natural environment, awarding
environmentally-sound practices with points on a rating system. We
would like to engage a student intern in developing a vision for an
educational feature that could contribute to the “Innovation in Design”
LEED credit. Possible ideas could include a comprehensive “sustainable
features” signage program, a model for monitoring energy use in the
building, or a manual/case study of the CTSB that could be used to
guide the planning and construction of future “green” buildings on the
U of R campus. The intern’s We would like
to begin development on these ideas as
soon as possible.
The project will require about 2 months’ time at an effort of roughly
10 hours/week. We are interested in students that have had previous
exposure to the LEED rating system or that have a general interest in
sustainable design and/or environmental sustainability in general.
