Guide to Service & Learning
CSN and the Rochester Center for Community Leadership have created a guide for students who are interested in volunteering in the Rochester community.  Students are encouraged to view the guide before participating in service.  Paper copies of the guide can be obtained at the CSN Office, or the Rochester Center for Community Leadership.

UR Learning with Rochester City School District Students
The site is a starting ground for the ongoing process of becoming a skilled educator and mentor. It includes information on UR programs, city demographics, district statistics, tutoring and mentoring strategies, curriculum information, and more. Reviewing this resource is a step in becoming an effective advocate for Rochester city students, and a step in becoming a social advocate for them in a larger context. Through the aid of this site tutors and mentors will begin to understand the dynamics of educating.

Transportation

CSN Van
The Community Service Network has a van for individuals and groups to use when doing community service programs within the City of Rochester. Priority for van use is given to CSN Supported Programs. More information can be requested from Beverly Buscemi at beverly.buscemi@rochester.edu.

Bus Lines
University of Rochester students, faculty, and staff have free access to the Red Line, Blue Line, and Green Line buses managed by University Transportation and Parking.

Schedules for free University buses

Additionally, University of Rochester students, faculty, and staff have access (must pay a fare) to the 18 and 19 bus lines, which make stops on the River Campus. For more information on RTS bus service, contact the Rochester Genesee Regional Transportation Authority.

City Cycles
City Cycles is a free, student-run bicycle library for members of the University of Rochester community. Anyone with a valid University ID can take out a bike until 4pm the following day. Visit Central Issue at Goergen Athletic Center to sign out equipment. By providing and advocating for necessary equipment and infrastructure, City Cycles facilitates cycling in the University community. They strive to establish cycling as an attractive, viable, and sustainable mode of transportation.

Transportation Safety
University Security Service offers these helpful safety tips when traveling in the city.
  • Before you go learn some facts about the place you are visiting.
  • Walk with a purpose. Look confident and keep your head up.
  • Make eye contact with others as you pass by them.
  • Tell a friend or roommate where you will be, and when you expect to return.
  • Don’t leave personal belongings unattended, even for a moment.
  • Know how to summon help in an emergency, on or off campus.
  • Travel in groups whenever possible.

Service and Philanthropy Activity Record (SPAR)

SPAR Website
It is important for the College to know about and recognize student involvement in our community. For that reason, the Rochester Center for Community Leadership encourages students to help the College document their community-based activity. The Service and Philanthropy Activity Record is a self-reported document, with verification by the Rochester Center for Community Leadership, listing organizational participation in service, philanthropy, and community activities. The Record is available to student organizations registered in the Campus Club Connection or through the Athletics & Recreation.
