Description of this Volunteer Opportunity: "Friends Helping Friends is a grassroots nonprofit organization that needs groups of volunteers or individual volunteers to do light construction work, bicycle repair, sorting of donations, clerical work, grantwriting and much more! Friends Helping Friends receives donations of hundreds of used and new bikes at 226-230 Hudson Avenue. FHF repairs and teaches bike repair to kids involved with the court system. We then distribute the bicycles to the community at large through intermediary organizations. FHF works with the Citywide Youth Crusade to sponsor monthly educational community-based programs at the First Genesis Missionary Baptist Church. We distribute groceries and clothing by appointment at 333 Child Street and runs a thrift store with low-cost furniture, appliances and household items. In addition, FHF provides transitional housing for homeless individual(s) at its residential unit at 30 Mark Street."

Description of this Volunteer Opportunity: "Compeer's Students Serving Groups program provides volunteers with an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of residents of group homes as well as their own. Students will be matched in pairs if possible, visiting a community residence once a week to facilitate and participate in leisure activities that they have prepared. Volunteers are responsible for creating a calendar of the activities at the beginning of each month. The calendar will then be submitted to a site supervisor for approval and distribution to residents. Description of this Volunteer Opportunity: The InterVol Recovery of Unused Medical Supplies (RUMS)
program helps reduce waste locally and provide essential medical supplies abroad by collecting from local hospitals and individuals, sorting and packaging in the Rochester warehouse, and arranging shipments to destinations that have recently included Kenya and Belize. The sorting of donated supplies is accomplished entirely through the
work of volunteers and InterVol is always looking for more. There are sorting parties on the first and third Tuesdays of every month from 6-8 PM and any time a group of six or more wishes to schedule their own event. "Founded in 1946, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society offers services for people with MS and furthers MS advocacy efforts." Bowling with MS Patients: 2nd and 4th Monday of every month from April 10 through May 29. Volunteers to help clients set up bowling ramps and help with lifting the bowling ball. Volunteer must be able to lift 16 pounds. Clover Lanes on Monroe Avenue. Aquatic Class with MS Patients: May 1 through August 31.  Every Monday from 11:00am to 12:00pm.  Volunteers will assist clients with exercises, getting in and out of the pool. Volunteers must be able to remain in a pool of semi cool water for at least 1 hour.  Volunteers will not be required to assist clients with dressing.

Alternatives for Battered Women offers safe and nurturing shelter for women endangered by domestic violence and their children. We help women stay safe, help them access Family Court to obtain orders of protection, and provide them with information about community resources. We can answer questions about hurtful dating relationships or the warning signs that their partner is becoming abusive. 1: Volunteering with seniors.  Provide companionship to a lonely or homebound senior in Rochester.  This can be done through telephone reasurrance or through friendly visiting.  Some of these seniors are Russian immigrants.

We are currently in need of volunteers to serve as tutors and assist individuals in preparing for a GED or driver permit test. We have an Adopt a House program, opportunities include visiting with residents, assisting with garden planting and upkeep, assisting on recreational outings, sharing skills in art or music. Our Adopt a Day Services Site program could utilize volunteers in music and art groups as well as in tutoring groups. One time events are also an option. The possibilities are endless!

Description of this Volunteer Opportunity: ACORN, the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, is the nation's largest community organization of low and moderate-income families working together for social justice and stronger communities, for 30 years they have served New Orleans and 90 other cities across the nation. ACORN has gutted more than 1,500 homes since December 2005, however we still have more than 1,000 homes left on our list.  We are working as fast as possible to finish these homes before the city begins seizing and demolishing homes. Description of this Volunteer Opportunity: Volunteers of America serves individuals in need through programs that include housing for the homeless, care and educational programs for at-risk children, drug & alcohol recovery services, homelessness prevention services, and an emergency food pantry. We are seeking groups that can organize clothing drives in order to collect items to be re-sold in VOA stores or given to people in need. The revenue generated through the sale of items in VOA stores helps fund the agency’s Human Services programs. Clothing drives can be held anytime throughout the year and we can schedule to have items picked up from your location (in the greater Rochester area) once the drive is completed.
