4140 bicycles loaned to 1175 City Cyclers since April 18, 2007.

The Program

The City Cycles 2008 season begins Tuesday, April 15th. The bicycles can be checked out from Goergen Athletic Center's front desk. Every Tuesday, Towpath Bike will be offering discounted bicycle repair services for students' bicycles from 1-3PM. New to the fleet this year is a tandem bicycle ("a bicycle built for two"), and over the course of the season, we will be increasing the number of bikes from 15 to 20. Last year we nearly doubled the utilization of the program, and we anticipate another record breaking season in 2008.

City Cycles is a free bicycle lending library for University of Rochester undergraduates and members of the Goergen Athletic Center. It is our mission to promote bicycling as an attractive and sustainable mode of transportation for the University of Rochester community. We strive to accomplish this by providing high-quality cycling equipment and services and by encouraging off-campus exploration and experiences.

In keeping with City Cycles' desire to make more bikes available to people when they need them, we offered services to bicycle owners as well as borrowers. As part of our maintenance contract with Towpath Bike Shop of Pittsford, NY, the company offered on-campus services to bike owners every Tuesday from 1:00 to 3:00 on the Wilson Commons Quad. Naturally, Towpath is not on campus during the off-season but they will be back in April.

City Cycles is a student entrepreneurial venture that, since its founding in 2004, has sought to create a model for university bicycle libraries that could be reproduced at other schools. The program's founders, Andrew Hall ('07 T5) and Adam Baratz ('07) travelled to Minneapolis in April of 2007 to present at the National Intramural and Recreational Sports Association annual conference. Andrew presented at the regional NIRSA conference held in Ithaca, NY this November. See City Cycles' new web presence at www.city-cycles.com.
