You should first find the license key and information regarding downloading the installation manager in an email from the Chief Engineer.

See bottom of page for screenshots to help you through the process.

Although this guide is written for SolidWorks 2015-16, it is still applicable for future versions, except for the following differences:

2016-17[edit]

  • The only Serial numbers required are for SOLIDWORKS Standard, Professional, Premium or SolidNetWork License, and--for those installing it--SOLIDWORKS Composer
  • Do not install SOLIDWORKS PDM Client. Use only the Workgroup PDM add-in discussed below

Beginning Installation or Upgrade Process[edit]

The first several steps of installing a fresh copy, and of upgrading an existing installation, are the same.

  • Download and run SolidWorksSetup.exe
  • Select Individual (on this computer) and then click Next
  • Tick the box next to SOLIDWORKS Standard, Professional, Premium or SolidNetWork License, but do NOT tick any other boxes
  • Type in the 24 digit license key, and click Next

Fresh Installation[edit]

Follow these steps if you have either uninstalled any previous version of SolidWorks, or have never installed it to begin with.

You should now be looking at the Summary dialog, listing all of the products to be downloaded and installed. Some of these settings need to be changed from default:

  • Select CHANGE next to Products
  • Tick the box next to SolidWorks Explorer/Workgroup PDM, and then the box next to SolidWorks Workgroup PDM x64 Client Add-in
  • Deselect the box next to SolidWorks Explorer
  • All other products can be left to their default selection status
  • Click Back to Summary
  • Click the + next to Download Options and make sure it is set to Download and Install
  • Tick the box next to I accept the terms of the SOLIDWORKS and then click Download and Install
  • Click Finish, and if SolidWorks prompts you to restart, you should probably do so

Upgrading from a Previous Version[edit]

Follow these steps if you installing a new version of SolidWorks over your existing version.

  • Select Upgrade SOLIDWORKS 2014 to SOLIDWORKS 2015 SP2.1. and then click Next

You should now be looking at the Summary dialog, listing all of the products to be downloaded and installed. Some of these settings need to be changed from default:

  • Select CHANGE next to Products
  • Tick the box next to SolidWorks Explorer/Workgroup PDM, and then the box next to SolidWorks Workgroup PDM x64 Client Add-in
  • Deselect the box next to SolidWorks Explorer, if it is already selected
  • All other products can be left to their default selection status
  • Click Back to Summary
  • Click the + next to Download Options and make sure it is set to Download and Install
  • Tick the box next to I accept the terms of the SOLIDWORKS and then click Download and Install

SolidWorks may prompt you about upgrading/overwriting directories. If this happens, click Yes.

SolidWorks may also prompt you about transferring your current license. Again, if this happens click Yes.

  • Click Finish, and if SolidWorks prompts you to restart, you should probably do so

Transferring License[edit]

  • Select Automatically over the Internet (recommended) and click Next
  • Click Finish, and continue with installation process

Activating your SolidWorks License[edit]

Before you can actually use SolidWorks, you should activate the license on your machine. The first time you start SolidWorks, you will be prompted to automatically do so.

  • Find and start SolidWorks
  • Select I want to activate my SolidWorks product now and click Next
  • Select Automatically over the Internet (recommended) and click Next
  • Enter all of your personal details and then click Next
  • SolidWorks should now prompt you that the activation was successful. Click Finish
